Listen – Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker ‘The Waning Crescent’

To celebrate the announcement of Overnight, the forthcoming debut album by Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, they share first single ‘The Waning Crescent’. The album follows their Rough Trade debut EP, Through The Clouds, which was released earlier this year.

Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker won Best Duo at the 2015 BBC Folk Awards. Their rendition of the traditional ballad The Banks of The Sweet Primroses at the televised awards ceremony prompted 6 Music DJ Cerys Matthews to invite them to appear in Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good at The National Theatre.

Clarke explains, “I started to think about if I was the moon, what I might think and feel, and what the moon might sing back,” adding, “I’ve given it a slightly whiny, self-pitying quality because it’s whimsical and a bit funny.”

‘The Waning Crescent’ is meant to fit the song’s subject matter. “We’ve done vignettes before where we’ve taken on a musical genre because that’s what fits the concept of the song. On this one, we’ve used the ‘50s and ‘60s space-race era pop sound to deliberately compound the moon theme,” says Josienne.
